Squaring The Curve: Reimagining PT In A Post Industrial Healthcare Setting

The rate of chronic disease in the United States continues to grow unchecked, despite devoting 18% of our GDP to healthcare expenditures, 86% of which are devoted to treating chronic disease. The abysmal performance of our legacy healthcare system, whereby disease is managed with drugs, surgery and procedures after disease has developed has been an abysmal failure both financially and in the immeasurable cost borne in lives lacking health, vitality and joy. Exercise represents the single most effective treatment for all the major chronic diseases yet is rarely prescribed, effectively dosed or systematically managed by the healthcare community. Most frontline healthcare professionals have little time or expertise in helping patients use exercise other powerful interventions such as sleep, diet, or stress management to prevent disease. Physical Therapists are uniquely skilled in assisting patients in leveraging all of these powerful tools. NOW is the time to lead our communities and country in a different direction: One that prevents disease, empowers wellness, and builds communities with members who live thriving, fulfilling lives. This presentation presents a strategic framework for offering these services and seeks to engender a robust discussion on how our profession can build a healthcare counterculture.
